Rita Marreiros, PhD

Postdoctoral Scholar, Prusiner & Condello Labs

Rita Marreiros received her BSc in biomedical sciences from the University of Algarve, Portugal, and her MSc in cellular and molecular biology, with a specialization in neurosciences, from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. She received her doctoral degree in natural sciences from the University of Duesseldorf, Germany, in 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Carsten Korth, MD, PhD. Rita’s doctoral work focused on understanding the mechanisms of protein homeostasis dysfunction in chronic brain disorders, mainly in neurodegenerative and psychiatric pathologies.

In October 2019, Dr. Marreiros joined the Prusiner and Condello labs as a postdoctoral scholar. At the IND, Rita studies the infectivity role of extracellular vesicles associated with different prion strains of Aβand tau in neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. She is also interested in characterizing the infectivity role of the different prion strains associated with neurodegenerative disorders in human brain samples.
