Kurt Giles, DPhil

Dr. Kurt Giles is Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neurology and Director of In Vivo Studies at the IND. He obtained his MA and DPhil degrees from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, followed by postdoctoral training at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. Prior to joining UCSF in 2002, he held faculty positions at the Weizmann Institute and the University of Oxford. Dr. Giles has over 20 years of experience in basic and translational neurodegenerative disease research. At the IND, he leads the development of novel rodent models of multiple neurodegenerative diseases and has pioneered the use of in vivo reporters to monitor disease progression in live mice and rats. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles on topics that span understanding the molecular basis of prion propagation to preclinical studies in mice. His most recent work is focused on developing therapeutics for a range of neurodegenerative diseases.
